2016

Performance
2016

Tuesday 12 July 2016 was a DADA day. A day just like any other and therefore just as DADA as the rest. The seven versions of this ordinary day as given by the seven newspapers of widest circulation in Argentina are now recycled into a DADAist video installation. Seven print runs spill their dry verbiage. A useless but essential exercise. How many eggs could have been wrapped in their pages now turned into art? How many floors their sheets protected? How many cages their pages lined? How much piss absorbed their pulp? How many asses in strips wiped? How many a fragile thing their broadsides kept safe? How many beggars sheltered and how much broken glass disarmed? Ah Voltaire! DADA enlightenment of a cabaret-Argentina, oh what a whore of a world!

About the video installation

This ludic and antic performative video installation for seven screens was especially commissioned by Pasaje 17 – Galería de Arte Contemporáneo to mark the centenary of the birth of Dadaism, the most current of the historical avant-gardes.

Procedures

Among the myriad definitions of the term “Dada” essayed by the Dadaists themselves, Raoul Hausmann proposed the following: “Dada… wants over and over again movement: it sees peace only in dynamism.” This aspiration motivated the radical Dadaist experiments with typography, photomontage, film, sound poetry, simultaneous poetry, music and dance. –RRAGIA, a performative video installation for seven screens constructed from gestures, signs and sounds extracted from the seven versions of Tuesday 12 July 2016 given by the seven newspapers of widest circulation in Argentina, utilizes variations on these techniques to generate a Dadaist portrait of Argentina and the world. In his 1920 Dada Almanach, Richard Huelsenbeck wrote: “Dada is the chaos from which a thousand orders rise, that intertwine and devour one another to become Dada again. Dada is the course and the content of the entire world process at the same time.” The resulting audiovisual cacophony isn’t more absurd or grotesque or violent than its sources. Blurred, coincidences and contradictions reconfigure anarchically. Let’s hope Francis Picabia was right and “Our heads are round so our thoughts can change direction.”
